Early Years and Foundation Stage

The early years foundation stage at Kelvin Grove is made up of both nursery and reception classes.  We are very proud of our approach to early years education, believing in its distinct importance in preparing our children for later schooling and life.

We constantly aim to provide an environment that is happy, warm, secure and stimulating, encouraging the children to think for themselves, exercise their imagina- tions and, very importantly, have fun and develop a love of learning.

We follow the foundation stage curriculum thoroughly, offering the very best opportunities, which underpin all future learning through supporting, fostering and promoting children’s development. The curriculum is made up of 7 areas of learning, all of which are of equal importance and inter-connected. Three areas are particu- larly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

These are the three prime areas:
  • communication and language;
  • physical development;
  • personal, social and emotional development.
We also equally support the four specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. These being:
  • literacy;
  • mathematics;
  • understanding the world;
  • expressive arts and design.

We constantly aim to work closely in partnership with parents and carers to meet the needs of the children; ‘as parents / carers are their children’s first and most enduring educators’, parents and carers are always welcome at Kelvin Grove and we value any help or support you can offer.
